Inside every fire lookout tower, one instrument has been a constant companion to lookouts: the Osborne Fire Finder. This device, a mainstay in fire detection, combines simplicity with precision, offering a crucial service in the early detection and management of wildfires.

The Osborne Fire Finder was invented by William Bushnell Osborne, Jr., in the early 20th century, and it revolutionized how fire lookouts pinpointed the location of a fire. Before GPS and sophisticated satellite technology, this device provided a reliable method to determine a fire’s exact bearing from a lookout tower.

The device itself is elegantly simple: it consists of a circular map centered on the location of the tower, over which a rotating sighting arm is mounted. When smoke is spotted, the lookout uses the sighting arm to align sights with the smoke. The arm, which can rotate 360 degrees, points to a scale on the perimeter of the map, showing the azimuth degree or the direction from which the smoke is observed. This bearing can then be reported to fire management teams or used in conjunction with bearings from other towers to triangulate the fire’s exact location.

The workings of the Osborne Fire Finder are grounded in its design. The sighting arm is equipped with a sight vane and peep sights, allowing the lookout to take accurate readings. When a potential smoke is seen, the lookout aligns the sight vane with the smoke and reads the azimuth off the graduated circle. This process can be repeated as needed to monitor the movement of the fire, providing continuous updates on its direction and speed.

This method of sighting and reporting is critical because it helps in:

Despite advancements in technology, the Osborne Fire Finder remains in use today due to its reliability and simplicity. It does not depend on electricity or satellite signals, which can be crucial in remote or rugged terrains where modern technology might fail.

However, as with all tools, the Osborne Fire Finder is only as good as the person using it. Lookouts undergo thorough training to use this device effectively, learning to read subtle cues in the environment that could indicate a fire.

In the modern firefighting arsenal, the Osborne Fire Finder stands out as a testament to traditional skills and knowledge, reminding us that sometimes, the simplest tools are the most effective.
